Immersed in this land of warrior nomads at the Tour of Karamoja – The past more than 40 days have been of little or no rest, and still counting… Despite the unprecedented times, the last 7 days found Brian O O Jonathan and I covering the incredible Tour of Karamoja – Bike Event 2020 ? courtesy of team Kara-Tunga, Karamoja Tours & Arts.
Big shout out to the courageous team with which we traversed this, “Uganda’s Best Kept Secret”. Largely hectic, with some Tse Tse flies action ?, partly remote, but beautiful and raw all through, this journey on two wheels ? led from Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve to the picturesque Kidepo Valley National Park for most.
There was a team from Ultimate Cycling Uganda that rode from Kampala to Kidepo; crazy guys ?. It was great to have Amos Wekesa with us on some of the days. We thought we knew this region too well, but the past week sent us deeper as we were immersed even more in this land of warrior nomads.
Looking forward to sharing some of the goodness we were able to capture in the remote mountains and valleys of Karamoja. Many thanks to the team leader, Theo Vos for believing in us. Alakara noi!
Last November 2018, Theo (founder/director of Kara-Tunga) asked me to come to Moroto to coordinate the research for the Karamoja Tourism Academy. I never hesitated and resigned from my job in the Netherlands. A few weeks later I was there, fresh in Karamoja.
In collaboration with the Mountain Slayers of Uganda we developed a weekend trip to Karamoja including a morning on the mountain, an authentic cultural experience and a visit to Kidepo Valley National Park.
