In collaboration with the Mountain Slayers of Uganda we developed a weekend trip to Karamoja including a morning on the mountain, an authentic cultural experience and a visit to Kidepo Valley National Park.
Written by David Gonahasa – A drive through the night from Kampala led us to Karamoja, with the mandatory thing done (Climbing the Mountain – Oh that was painful); we then had the chance to discover what for a long time has been a number of myths and I sure had the time of my life – From change of wardrobe; we had to fit in, just seemed like we were the fattest people in the village. We danced, jumped, got given names – I was Christened Lokiru (Bringer of Rain) Considered making some Bride Price offers, Slept in a Kraal, sat with the elders as they chanted, sang and told stories through the night, Watched a goat get speared for dinner and roasted with its skin on, its dung used to bless each other, amazing sunsets and sunrises. We Made “The Stone Whichi” (If you know the song) an anthem, Saw how green Karamoja really is and the diverse and amazing culture it holds. We eventually made it to Kidepo, camped again in the wilderness; fun considering the idea of lions lurking around somewhere, and realized how all you really need in the Bush is a Bose speaker and good company.
I can say that trip was one of the most memorable times of my life. I will go back, see the biggest village in east Africa and Visit the IK who apparently have Spanish words in their language.
