The Tour of Karamoja 2022 TOK22 combined some of the most diverse and remote wilderness in East Africa if not all of Africa. The event entailed some of the most dramatic landscapes, amazing wildlife and some of the richest, most authentic cultural experiences all wrapped up in the most challenging, inspiring and rewarding cycling experience of my life.
I rode just the 350 km Southern Circuit of the TOK22, an epic 5 day cycling adventure that included the wide-open skies of Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve in Uganda; the cross-border ride to Lake Turkwel in Kenya; the epic ascent and dramatic descent of the East African Rift Valley and the ride across the desert landscape of Turkanaland (where only the elephant foot tree, camels and acacia’s seemed to blossom); before returning to the greenery of Moroto in Uganda.
I was truly inspired and met some amazing individuals with whom I shall develop lifelong friendships.
Last November 2018, Theo (founder/director of Kara-Tunga) asked me to come to Moroto to coordinate the research for the Karamoja Tourism Academy. I never hesitated and resigned from my job in the Netherlands. A few weeks later I was there, fresh in Karamoja.
This is an amazingly fun Belgian television series for children showing how people in the world live with animals. For this 16 episode series, our favourite Belgian musician/presenter Arne Vanhaecke, visited different homesteads and kraals in Karamoja. The series is produced by VTM Kzoom in collaboration with Veterinarians Without Borders Belgium. View all episodes here:
