Gabriel Gersch supports development Uganda’s Warrior Nomad Trail – Gabriel has a special connection with the wilderness and especially Karamoja. Seven years ago, it’s believed that he was the first modern-day adventurer to walk the full length of Karamojaland in 100 years. He is therefore the perfect person to help develop the long-distance walking trail.
Kara-Tunga co-founder Theo Vos bumped into the inspirational journey of Gabriel Gersch back in 2016. Gabriel and his companion walked from Mount Elgon National Park up to Kidepo Valley National Park. It was a staggering journey 5+ weeks and up to 700Km. Gabriel wrote about his journey on his website together with beautiful photos of Uganda’s wilderness and it never left Theo’s mind.
Gabriel Gersch (2013): “Accompanied by my friend Gerald Klamer I climbed Mt. Elgon in Eastern Uganda and afterwards crossed the entire region of Karamoja on foot. Karamoja is the country’s driest, most traditional and most dangerous place: foreign offices of all Western countries advice against going there, which makes it a place without any tourists, but the time we spent in the beautiful land of the “Nomad Warriors” was just absolutely amazing.” www.gabriel-gersch.com/
The Karamoja-traverse is not his only wilderness adventure as showcased on his website. Gabriel started as guide in Alaska and nowadays leads trips around the world, with the goal of offering affordable opportunities to people who might not be able to afford it. People cover their own expenses, with Gersch charging only a small amount for helping them with personal preparation and group leadership.” Learn more about Gabriel on his website Outventurous.com.
Theo’s ambition was to follow his ancestral migrational routes up to the described place of origin in Ethiopia and develop a tourism trail accordingly. A few years later, he teamed up with two journalists to the sacred hills of the Karimojong, located within the fast bushland of Matheniko Wildlife Reserve. This left him hungry for more.
Kara-Tunga recently launched the project to make this journey become reality; The Warrior Nomad Trail and Theo finally contacted Gabriel who enthusiastically joined the project do develop a long-distance hiking trail.
