How many African adventure trails forgo modern borders to follow in the footsteps of nomads and warriors, from thousands of years in the past?
Uganda-based social enterprise Kara-Tunga is doing just that – using ancient pathways to celebrate the tribal heritage of East Africa’s least-travelled areas.
The tour operator arranges archaeological, cycling and hiking tours, runs eco camps and even operates a tourism academy to conserve the local area and community. Among its offerings is the Warrior Nomad Trail. The ancient migration route traverses Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Uganda, and over the centuries was used by nomadic pastoralists from the Nilotic Karamojong, Kalenjin and Kuliak communities.
“The goal is to connect and unite using tourism,” says Karamojong-Dutch co-founder Theo Vos.
