Outdoor enthousiast know that having the appropriate type of equipment can play a big role in having a succesful adventure. Currently hiking tourism and adventure tourism in general is on the rise in Uganda, but quality and affordable equipment is still hard to find. The majority of people buys from the second hand markets and who can afford imports gear from abroad.

Mountains of Karamoja
The mountains of Karamoja are an exciting alternative to the more strenuous climbs in East Africa with many of the same attractions, a milder climate, lower elevation and requires no special equipment or technical experience.
As part of the Adventure Tourism Uganda initiative, the above facilitators held a one week baseline assessement of 12 hiking guides from Uganda’s Karamoja sub-region with the support of Karamoja Tourism Academy. With the knowledge gained, they will return to Karamoja in November 2021 to give the first of its kind hiking guide training in Karamoja.

Karamoja Tourism Academy
With the growth currently experienced in Karamoja’s tourism industry, the demand for qualified and experienced tour guides and hospitality staff is on the increase.
The reality is that the industry is growing faster than the amount of trained and certified people. The Karamoja Tourism Academy development programme aims at bridging this gap by training learners in the relevant skills as well as creating the opportunity to gain the necessary experience to enter the market as a qualified tour guide and hospitality staff.

In collaboration with various partners, the academy is developing tailer made trainings to match the growing demand for the regional culture and adventure tourism sector like:

Mountains of Karamoja

The so-called Karamoja plateau is defined by a string of volcanic mountains starting from Mount Kadam (3,063m), Mount Napak (2,538m), Mount Moroto (3,083m) and Mount Morungole (2,749m).
