10th June 2025, Moroto – Can you coordinate construction projects, do you like to work outside and do you like adventure? Then come and help build our lodge in Uganda! Then, Kara-Tunga is looking for you!
At Kara-Tunga, we are shaking up the tourism industry with the development of three new lodges in Karamoja — Uganda’s most remote, least developed, but arguably most beautiful region.
Position title: Construction Coordinator Duty Station: Kidepo Valley National Park and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve Contract: 6 months Requirements: Experience in Coordinating Construction projects in sub-saharan Africa meeting international standards. Reports to: Directors Working hours: Flexible Deadline application: 23rd of June 2025 Start of work: August 2025
Company background
Kara-Tunga is specialized in developing experiences in Uganda’s northeastern Karamoja sub-region. It offers outdoor adventure activities, cultural exchanges and a network of accommodation facilities. The accommodation facilities are strategically located throughout the region, aimed at offering travelers a comfortable base during their off-the-beaten-path Uganda adventure.
Your Role
Putting the finishing touches to the design, preparing the construction and then taking up the coordination on site. You may also help out in Kidepo Valley, where we are already in the middle of the construction phase.
Important to know
Please note: this is not a standard office job. You work in a remote area, with little direct support. It requires independence, perseverance, patience and a good sense of improvisation. But: you get something special in return. Working on the edge of a safari park, overlooking a mountain range, waking up in the wilderness and building something tangible that really has an impact.
Key Responsibilities:
The Construction Coordinator will be responsible for the overall management of the construction sites, ensuring the projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to international quality standards. This is a field-based role requiring significant on-the-ground presence and a hands-on approach.
Project Planning and Scheduling:
Collaborate with the Directors on the finalization of lodge designs and construction plans.
Develop detailed project timelines, including key milestones and deliverables.
Prepare and manage the construction schedule, ensuring all activities are properly sequenced and resources are allocated efficiently.
On-Site Coordination and Supervision:
Oversee all on-site construction activities, providing hands-on coordination and guidance to the local construction teams.
Manage and supervise subcontractors, laborers, and other on-site personnel.
Ensure that construction work is executed in accordance with the approved designs, specifications, and quality standards.
Monitor project progress daily and take corrective actions as necessary to maintain the schedule.
Procurement and Logistics:
Coordinate the procurement and timely delivery of all construction materials, tools, and equipment to the remote sites.
Manage on-site inventory of materials and ensure their proper storage and utilization to minimize waste.
Reporting and Communication:
Serve as the primary point of contact for all on-site project matters.
Provide regular progress reports to the Directors, highlighting achievements, challenges, and upcoming activities.
Maintain clear and consistent communication with all project stakeholders, including local community and authorities.
Quality, Safety Management and Environment:
Implement and enforce strict quality control measures throughout the construction process.
Ensure that all construction activities adhere to health and safety regulations and best practices, maintaining a safe working environment for all personnel.
Manage Environmental Impact Mitigation Plan.
Problem Solving and Adaptability:
Proactively identify and resolve any on-site issues, challenges, or conflicts that may arise.
Demonstrate resourcefulness and the ability to improvise effective solutions in a remote setting with limited direct support.
Qualifications
Essential: Proven experience in coordinating construction projects in sub-Saharan Africa, with a portfolio of projects completed to international standards.
A degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is highly desirable.
A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in a construction coordination or project management role.
Strong technical knowledge of construction methods, materials, and regulations.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural and engineering drawings and specifications.
Experience in managing project budgets and schedules.
A valid driver’s license.
What we are looking for
Independence and Self-Motivation: The ability to work autonomously in a remote and challenging environment with minimal supervision.
Perseverance and Patience: The resilience to navigate the complexities and potential delays of working in a developing region.
Improvisation and Problem-Solving: A strong aptitude for thinking on your feet and devising creative and practical solutions to unexpected challenges.
Leadership and Team Management: The ability to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse team of local workers and subcontractors effectively.
Cross-Cultural Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work respectfully and effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds.
Adaptability and Flexibility: A willingness to adapt to flexible working hours and changing project priorities.
Adventurous Spirit: A genuine interest in working outdoors, embracing the wilderness, and contributing to a project with a lasting positive impact.
What we offer
A 6-month contract.
The chance to contribute to sustainable tourism and community development in Karamoja.
