I just returned from a weeklong 350-mile cycling tour in the truly remote reaches of Northeast Uganda and Northwest Kenya known as the Tour of Karamoja; and while I feel a little tired from the physical effort, boy do I feel inspired, mentally refreshed, recharged and rejuvenated!
The 25 young women and men are coming from allover the region and have developed 25 new tourist products! They also learned about pricing, marketing, guiding and other practical adventure and community tourism skills.
A Karamojong village is also known as “Manyatta” or “Ere” meaning an enclosed residential area, surrounded by sharp thorns and with small entry points for people and a larger entry point for cattle. Since our humble beginnings, we’ve have been engaged in Community Tourism Development in the Karamoja region and Mount Moroto in specific. We learned by doing and we’re blessed to have gained experience and build a team with the capacity to continue building our dream: sustainable enhancement of community livelihoods through tourism.
