Maria Schiffer (writer): In November 2022, I was preparing to research a reportage I originally wrote for GEO Magazine on community tourism. This week, that article was republished in hashtag Brigitte Magazine, which makes me incredibly proud! This wasn’t just any article for me—during my research, I realized that stepping into the Karamoja Region awakened something I had been searching for: a starting point for working in Africa.
I spent nearly a year collaborating with Kara-Tunga, contributing as a creative and a project leader in community development. I learned so much during this time, and I can truly say I’m a different person than I was two years ago. Though tourism isn’t my main focus, I believe that anyone working in African tourism should prioritize community integration. Theo Vos with Kara-Tunga has done just that, and I see them as a shining example for others across the continent to follow.
