Your Role at Kara-Tunga
The Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies that effectively tell Kara-Tunga’s story, promote our initiatives, and engage diverse audiences. This role is crucial in raising our profile, attracting responsible tourists, and securing support for our community development projects. This position requires strong (writing and verbal) communications skills, independence and self-motivation, competency with computers software, and a commitment to ethical practices, including the prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (SEAH).
Key Responsibilities:
Content Creation: Develop compelling written and visual content (stories, articles, blog posts, social media updates, press releases, newsletters, brochures, videos, photos) that highlight Kara-Tunga’s activities, impact, and unique offerings.
Digital Communications: Manage and grow Kara-Tunga’s online presence, including website content updates, social media platforms (LinkedIn and Medium), and email marketing campaigns.
Media Relations: Build and maintain relationships with local, national, and international media outlets. Prepare and disseminate press releases, media kits, and respond to media inquiries.
Storytelling: Identify and develop human-interest stories from our operations, focusing on the impact of our work on local communities and the environment.
Brand Management: Ensure consistent brand messaging and visual identity across all communication channels.
Advocacy & Awareness: Support campaigns and initiatives that raise awareness about responsible tourism, cultural preservation, and sustainable development in Karamoja.
Event Support: Provide communication support for events, workshops, and community engagements.
Reporting: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and campaigns, preparing regular reports on key metrics.
Photography & Videography: Capture high-quality photos and videos of our operations, projects, and the Karamoja region.
Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues to ensure communication efforts align with organizational goals.
What we are looking for
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.
Experience: No minimum level experience, we accept graduates.
Technical Skills: Proven experience in content creation (writing, photography, videography) for various online platforms. Some experience in graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) and video editing software is highly desirable. Experience with website content management systems (e.g., WordPress).
Soft Skills: Creative and innovative mindset with a keen eye for compelling stories. Proactive and self-motivated with a strong sense of initiative. Culturally sensitive and adaptable to diverse environments. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Flexible and willing to take on new challenges. A good sense of humor and a positive attitude.
Language: Be an exceptional communicator in English (both verbal and written), and able to collaborate effectively across departments and with external stakeholders. Proficiency in Ngakarimojong or Kiswahili is a significant advantage.
Compliance: A demonstrated understanding of Ugandan Communications Law and other relevant (inter)national regulations. A clear commitment to SEAH prevention is non-negotiable.
Adaptability: The ability to thrive outside Kampala city and embrace unique operational challenges. A passion for the hospitality industry and commitment to excellent service is a bonus.
