Karamoja cultural workshops

The Karamoja Workshops are tours aimed at connecting travellers with craftsmen, two-way sharing of knowledge, improving communities livelihoods and preserving cultural heritage. Through the workshops, craftsmen are able to double or triple their income and learn more about a potential group of buyers and fellow artists.

Travellers get an unique insight into the life of the local community and share knowledge and stories by sharing quality time together.

The workshops

Beads making – Beads are the most iconic fashion item of our family of tribes in Africa. During this workshop of 4hrs you will learn first hand from a local teacher how to make your own souvenir, a colourful necklace or bangle.

Hat weaving – Before the current head fashion appeared, Karamojong men made their headdresses from weaving human hair and painting it with coloured clay and dressing it up with ostrich feathers. Nowadays this fashion is rare to find as the new generation has started to use coloured cotton threads to achieve a similar expression in less time. During this workshop of 4hrs you will learn first hand from a local teacher how to make your own souvenir, a colourful woven hat and learn all about it’s cultural history and importance.

Clay Sculpting – There’s only one artists in Karamoja preserving Karamoja’s cultural heritage through clay sculpting. Learn the unique craft passed on by earlier generations by a passionate young teacher.

Bee-keeping – Take a traditional Uganda Beekeeping Tour in Karamoja for a fun and educational tour about bees, beekeeping, and Uganda’s savannah honey. During this demonstration, you will explore an actual hive and learn where the queen resides, how honey is made, and what makes bees so special and interesting.

Basket Weaving – Food in Karamoja for centuries has been stored in crafty woven granaries. The granaries are woven and sold in harvest season and are sealed with cow dang and treated with charcoal to avoid animals to spoil the dried foods for consumption in dry season. During this workshop of 4hrs you will learn first hand from a local teacher how to make your own souvenir, a woven basket.
