We are looking back at an inspiring visit to Kijani Forestry in Gulu, which are revolutionising conservation through sustainable charcoal production.
This is one of many strategical partnerships we are building to roll out our ‘Karamoja Conservation Zone’ initiative. This initiative aims at environmental conservation of places adjacent to protected areas through development of sustainable community enterprises.
Sustainable Charcoal Production
The Karamoja sub-region in Uganda is rapidly developing and, as a result, at risk of deforestation and land degradation because of mining, agricultural expansion and charcoal and firewood production.
Karamoja Conservation Zones
The sub-region is in need of effective conservation and reforestation interventions. Mount Moroto and Mount Kadam Central Forest Reserves (CFRs), specifically, have been identified as restoration hotspots.
The Karamoja Conservation Zones initiative of Kara-Tunga Foundation (KTF) attends to this potential by developing and scaling a model for ‘buffer zones’ at the border of CFRs, starting at Mount Moroto and Mount Kadam. The core zone houses ecotourism activities and accommodation and a central ‘hub’ for the conservation efforts happening around.
Kara-Tunga Foundation
KTF is a Ugandan not-for-profit organisation which aims at fostering peace, prosperity and conservation of natural and cultural resources through eco-tourism development in Uganda’s northeastern Karamoja sub-region.
