Trekking in Uganda: climbing Mount Kadam volcano – day 2
During sunrise we enjoy an extensive breakfast. We prepare for a long day to the top of Mount Kadam and the long descent through camp 1 to the lower camp 2.
First we walk through the rainforest with many flowers, ancient trees and a hundred shades of green. Narrow creep through creepy paths (also called ‘the scratch street’ by us, because it results in scratched arms) alternated with steep slippery mud slopes. Higher up the volcano pieces of rock climbing with a view down to the valley.
Finally, there is a long mountain ridge covered with grass, flowers, heather and succulents. At half past one we are on top of Mount Kadam (3,063m) with spectacular views. A vertical abyss and we look from above on the rainforest and the savannah below.
In the descent I help Nelleke. She is tired and empty after a night on a leaking air mattress. In camp 1 (2,400m) we have a last break. Then we descend to Camp 2 (1,900m). Just before sunset we set up the tents and freshen up. We take the time for a good meal and enjoy our long but beautiful top day.
