From the National Parks in Eastern Uganda, we set our compasses toward Karamoja. Back in Kampala, where we rented our bikes, we coincidentally met a Dutch guy with Ugandan roots, Theo Vos, who owns a travel agency called Kara-Tunga. Theo invited us to come to Karamoja and really sold the place to us, mentioning adventure, off-road tracks, culture, and beautiful nature. It’s a region where very few tourists go and all that combined got us excited.
After witnessing a long period of armed conflict and isolation, Karamoja is now starting to open up to the world. As a result of years of isolation, this area has witnessed little outside influence and is one-of-a-kind. The people there are called the Karamajong and they are mainly nomadic pastoralists. Others rely on hunting and gathering for their livelihood.
Due to the relative tranquility of recent years, tourism in this part of Uganda has been increasing. People from all over the world are starting to discover the region. As we experienced, this is an outright clash of cultures. Kara-Tunga, we think, does a great job in the field of sustainable tourism. According to Theo, we would be among the first to discover Karamoja by motorbike.
@WeWantAdventure “At the moment we are in a region called Karamoja. A part of Uganda that is still quite new with tourism. Thanks to Kara-Tunga, Karamoja Tours we could experience the local life of this amazing place.”

The beautiful people of Karamoja
Kidepo National Park wasn’t really on our route, but we decided to go to this remote national park in Uganda. Wow! What a beautiful place!
If you travel to or from Kidepo Valley NP, this place is worth a detour. Not specific about the lodge itself, but Theo and his colleagues really offer a special program to get to know the area and the Karamojo people.
Birding in Pian Upe Reserve, Northeastern Uganda – The birds were simply amazing. Besides many typical East-African savanna species (which are not so easy to find in Uganda but are fairly common in Kenya and Tanzania) we spotted many of the more localised “specials” like…
Birding in Uganda’s Northeastern Karamoja – Birders have featured the Karamoja region as ‘Undiscovered Outback of Uganda‘ and ‘A truly unique birding Environment’ due to the magnificent scenery, remarkable tribal cultures, birds and wildlife that you won’t see elsewhere in Uganda.
Motorbike Trip through Karamoja and Turkana land on Warrior Nomad Trail
Motorbike Safari through Uganda’s Karamoja land – The Dutch couple Mandy and Peter travelled a week through Karamoja land and drove their motorbikes through the savannah planes and volcanic ranges. We had the pleasure to guide them through our homeland and gave them a taste of our untouched culture and true African wilderness.
