Traditional village

Hiking & Walking

Mt Moroto, Mt Napak, Mt Kadam

Karamoja’s mountain ranges are an exciting alternative to the more strenuous climbs in Uganda with many of the same attractions, a milder climate, lower elevation and requires no special equipment or technical experience.

1 day hike: snacks, packed lunch and water included.
2-3 day treks: camping equipment, porters for equipment and food, snacks, packed lunch, water, diner and breakfast included.

Visit the Mysterious Ik-tribe

Combine your Kidepo Valley safari with an expedition to Uganda’s most remote living tribe called the ‘Ik’. Before Kidepo Valley was gazetted as national park, the Ik lifed peacefully together with wildlife. In 1962 the ruling government of Uganda turned the valley into a national park that made the Ik migrate into the steep mountains. Today the community is producing the best honey in Uganda and conducting agriculture but still strugling to adapt to their new environment. The breathtaking hike (3hrs up and 2hrs) is accompanied by breathtaking scenes in the valleys below you and into the Eastern Rift Valley.

Mountain biking

The ideal means to connect with the local community and the untouched landscape for the active traveler. Cycle from the scenic foothills of Mount Moroto to the savannah planes and interact with the local communities.

Boda Boda Tour

Adventure through the surroundings of Mount Moroto by using the most popular local means of transport. The Boda Boda gives you the flexibility to follow beautiful roads through the villages and the speed to witness the diversity of the landscapes, people, taste of local foods and daily activities. 
Inquire about the possibility of visiting the weekly cattle auctions and the magnificent escarpment into Kenya’s Turkanaland.

Workshops

The Workshops are aimed at connecting travellers with craftsmen. Travellers get an unique insight into the life of the local community and share knowledge and stories by sharing quality time together. 
Inquire about the availability of the workshops: preparation of traditional foods, hat weaving, clay sculpting / pottery and traditional beading.

Nakapelimoru village walk

East Africa’s largest traditional village

Visit Nakapelimoru village nearby Kotido town, known as the largest traditional village in East Africa and home to the Jié (fighters). The community has grown over the years and culture has been preserved like the controversial facial and body scarifications. During the visit you’ll start with a climb to a nearby rock formation for an introduction about the village from above. Hereafter the local guide takes you to a homestead to learn about the differences and similarities with other clans and tribes in Karamojaland.

Sacred land walking safari

Matheniko Wildlife Reserve

Alternatively, in dry season only, choose to settle at the edge of the Matheniko Wildlife Reserve for an ultimate bush experience overlooking the sacred grounds of the Karamojong. This Out of Africa experience includes afternoon walking safari, one night remote bush camp, visit to ancestral rock paingting and authentic cultural experiences. It excludes transportation that can be booked for an additional $150 taking 4 guests.
