Via Via Tourism Academy (Belgium) sees tourism as an engine for the regenerative development of a region. Using a holistic approach, residents, entrepreneurs, government and visitors together create a flourishing community that respects the place with its people, culture and nature. Tourism thus creates a collaborative advantage instead of a competitive one. Regional regeneration creates solutions adapted to the unique bio-cultural uniqueness of the place, ensuring greater biodiversity and climate resilience.
During five days ViaVia Tourism Academy guided the stakeholders on a journey towards regenerative tourism in the Karamoja region.
Regenerative Tourism
Regenerative tourism focuses on the place and the local community. Tourism is rooted in the local communities. In which residents, entrepreneurs and visitors create a flourishing community together.
Tourism thus provides a collaborative advantage instead of a competitive one.
Regional regeneration creates solutions adapted to the unique bio-cultural identity of a place and thus ensures greater biodiversity and climate resilience.
This is a pilot project in which we create a global impact from a glocal (global + local) approach, which will also be applied in other regions of Uganda in a next step.
Karamoja Uganda’s Land of Warrior Nomads – National Geographic photographer David Pluth made his first trip to Karamoja and Kidepo Valley National Park in early 1997. It started as a simple picture book and got completely out of hand.

Karamoja develops Uganda’s first Travel Manifesto and Pledge
Sustainable tourism is no longer enough. The people of Karamoja have embraced regenerative tourism to create a better world through travel.
Since tourism in Uganda’s Karamoja sub-region is still in its infancy, it is incredibly important to raise awareness and to set expectations and guidelines now.
Karamoja is the first place in East Africa where the host community wrote a Travel Manifesto and ask visitors to take a Tourist Pledge.
